Ruben Amorim has had a poor start to the season at Manchester United and the club are reportedly considering other managerial options.
Manchester United have won just two of their opening seven games in all competitions this season, with those victories coming against Chelsea and Burnley.
Ruben Amorim’s side needed an early red card and a last-minute penalty to secure wins in those games.
After a disastrous campaign last time out, United needed to start this season strongly and they have failed to do that.
Their latest defeat came at Brentford as they lost 3-1 to the Bees and the pressure feels like it’s starting to build on Amorim.
When United could sack Amorim
While previous reports suggested that Amorim still has the full backing of the United board, that will likely change if results don’t improve immediately.
United have still not won two games in a row under the Portuguese coach’s leadership, which is quite staggering and he appears unwilling to adjust his tactics.
According to a new report from TalkSport, if United end up sacking Amorim, they are likely to wait until after 1 November to reduce the amount of compensation needed to pay.
Amorim signed a contract at Old Trafford until June 2027 in November last year and United would need to pay £12 million if they were to sack him before he reaches the one-year mark. That figure reduces heavily after 1 November.
United face Nottingham Forest on that date and then play away at Tottenham Hotspur the following weekend. There is then a two-week international break before the Reds play Everton on 24 November.
The report also mentioned that Gareth Southgate, Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola are the three managers being considered as replacements for Amorim.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has even had direct contact with Southgate, who remains out of work following his exit from the England manager’s role, in recent weeks.
United’s next appointment won’t be exciting
If the club are to sack Amorim soon, it doesn’t feel like there will be much excitement over the next appointment at Old Trafford.
Even if the Reds get a promising manager like Iraola, there is simply no guarantee that he falls apart under the pressure of the United job.
Southgate has not managed in club football for over 15 years and would be the kind of appointment that would disappoint many supporters.
Amorim could end up turning things around and proving people wrong, but that would need a level of adaptability that he has failed to show so far.
