With Manchester United looking to re-enter the transfer race for Viktor Gyökeres, the striker has spoken to his teammates about his future.
Viktor Gyökeres has re-emerged as one of Manchester United’s main summer striker targets. The Swedish international has become one of the most in-demand strikers on the planet following a stellar 2024/25 campaign where he has registered over 50 goal involvements.
Recently, it has seemed the club was leaning toward Liam Delap, who has impressed this season in a poor Ipswich side. Despite not being anywhere near as prolific as Gyökeres, Delap does have Premier League experience, which recent transfers have been criticised for lacking.
However, Ruben Amorim is said to prefer the purchase of Gyökeres, whom he signed for Sporting Lisbon and whom Fabrizio Romano has revealed will be available for less than his £85 million release clause.
When recently asked to address all of the speculation about his future, Gyökeres was guarded. “It’s football, I’m still here. I don’t know what’s going to happen. Nobody can predict the future.”
Due to Gyökeres’ caginess, the media has taken to questioning his teammates to try and find out if the striker has been more open about his future behind closed doors.
Gyokeres with his teammates
Sporting Lisbon and Portugal winger Pedro Goncalves was asked about Gyökeres’ future ahead of this weekend’s Taça de Portugal final.
Goncalves was asked whether or not he had asked Gyökeres about his future. “I did, and so did the whole squad. He says he’s not a fortune teller.”
Although Gyökeres’ presence at the club would have a massive effect on Sporting next season, Goncalves isn’t currently focused on the issue. “We still have the Portuguese Cup against Benfica to play. I have a very good relationship with him, but I don’t talk about it with him.”
Following some of Gyökeres’ comments about not knowing his future, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the situation is clearer behind the scenes and that Gyökeres will leave the club.
Romano’s comments have clearly made it back to the Sporting squad as Goncalves said, “What I know is because of Fabrizio Romano… I’m sticking with him. I don’t know if he’s going to leave.”
A Big week coming up for Gyökeres
Goncalves mentioned that his current focus was on the final against Benfica and not his teammate’s transfer saga. Gyökeres has displayed the same mentality, not wanting to speak on the issue while the season is ongoing.
The Swedish striker may also be waiting to see the result of Wednesday evening’s Europa League final before making any announcement about his future. Arsenal have Gyökeres high on their transfer target list, and United may need to secure Champions League football next season to compete with them for his signature.

From United’s perspective, Wednesday’s final against Tottenham may influence their decision on which striker to pursue.
The club’s financial situation is currently precarious, and the influx of cash provided by securing European football might be necessary to sign Gyökeres. If they fail to win, they may look for a cheaper alternative, such as re-entering the race for Jonathan David.
Once this season ends, the situation with Gyokeres will likely become clearer. The striker may become more candid about his future once the season has concluded, and crucially, the Europa League final will likely decide both parties’ minds about how they’re going to proceed this summer.
