What Jason Wilcox is already thinking about Manchester United’s January transfer window after £215m plan

Manchester United’s director of football Jason Wilcox’s early thoughts about the January transfer window have been revealed.

Manchester United were highly active during the summer transfer window, completing much of their business with four major signings.

Ruben Amorim bolstered his squad by bringing in Senne Lammens, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Šeško, each recruited to add both quality and depth. Young fullback Diego Leon also arrived, with the total spend being around £215 million for the five players.

Just as impactful were the departures, with several players moving on from Old Trafford, including three confirmed on deadline day.

Among the most notable exits were Jadon Sancho, Antony, Rasmus Højlund, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, who departed either on permanent transfers or loan deals.

What Wilcox is already thinking about United’s January transfer window

Despite having only just finished the summer window, there is already talk about what could happen when January comes around.

According to Graeme Bailey, United’s director of football Jason Wilcox does not believe much business will be needed at Old Trafford in the new year.

It was explained how United chiefs are ‘happy with the balance’ of Amorim’s squad, but also that they will still be assessing their options ahead of the mid-season transfer window.

“They will assess the situation in January, but even then, they don’t feel, no matter what happens, that major changes will be required come the New Year,” Bailey told UnitedInFocus.

“Jason Wilcox and the football department knew that Ruben Amorim’s system did not fit with this squad, but they have now built a squad capable of playing that.

“Whilst not the finished article, they realise that they are happy with what they have done thus far – very happy with the balance of the squad.”

United must solve midfield dilemma somehow

It is never easy to sign top targets in January windows, so it is understandable if United do not have any major plans for the mid-season window.

But results will certainly change things, and unless things drastically change, every fan will be crying out for a new midfielder from January 1 to the end of that window.

There are major concerns over Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte at the moment, while question marks remain over where Kobbie Mainoo fits into the team.

If Amorim can solve some of the issues in that engine room through tactical tweaks, or simply improved form from the players, then it will be something that can wait until the summer.

If not, then Wilcox might have to try and find a mid-season solution in the transfer window.
