“We’re interested” – Premier League manager breaks silence on Man Utd target Liam Delap

Manchester United are interested in signing Liam Delap from Ipswich Town this summer but the striker is expected to have many suitors within the Premier League.

One of the biggest priorities at Manchester United this summer is to solve their goalscoring issues as Ruben Amorim’s men have struggled in the final third all season long.

Matheus Cunha is one player who looks set to come in and provide some extra quality in those areas, while Liam Delap is the target up front.

Delap, 22, has scored 12 goals for Ipswich Town in the Premier League this season and has showcased solid fundamentals which suggest he will improve even further.

After relegation was confirmed for the Tractor Boys, the centre-forward’s release clause has dropped to just £30 million, which is great value for money.

However, United are not alone in their admiration of Delap and several other clubs want to sign him – with one manager coming out and revealing his club’s interest this week.

The main competitor for Delap’s signature appears to be Chelsea, who are also looking to strengthen in their striker position.

However, Everton are another club who would love to sign the England youth international, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin likely leaving them this summer.

David Moyes, current Toffees boss and ex-United manager, has explained that his team are certainly interested in Delap.

However, the Scotsman has admitted that Delap will have bigger clubs looking to sign him this summer too – likely referencing clubs such as United and Chelsea.

“He would be one who we would certainly have an interest in,” Moyes told reporters when asked about the 22-year-old this week.

“I think what he probably has to look at will probably be bigger than what we are. So, we would certainly be interested if he was interested in us. That’s for sure.”

Why Delap is such an attractive target

While there are some question marks over Delap, such as his ability to lead the line at Old Trafford when other young talents have failed, it is clear that he’s highly rated across the league.

The £30 million release clause is a huge attraction, as he would probably be valued upwards of £50 million without it included in his contract.

United do not have unlimited funds this summer and the release clause, mixed with the fact that his wages would not be huge, make Delap a very interesting prospect.

But the club need to be able to convince him of a move, and show why he should join United over other interested teams. Perhaps the guarantee of game-time will give them the upper hand, as Delap would be the first-choice centre-forward if he joined.
