Wayne Rooney suggests shock England call-up for Man United outcast
Wayne Rooney has suggested that Mason Greenwood should be considered for an England call-up following his form at Getafe on loan from Manchester United.
Mason Greenwood has started to play consistent football this season following his absence from Manchester United after he was accused of domestic abuse in January 2022.
Although the CPS dropped his case, United ultimately decided in the summer of 2023 that he would recommence his career elsewhere following fan pressure after rumours that they wanted to integrate Greenwood into Erik ten Hag‘s squad.

After this announcement, he was eventually cast away to La Liga club Getafe, where he has started rediscovering some of the form he showed before his multiple arrests. He has played 26 times for the Madrid-based side, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in that time.
With EURO 2024 around the corner, much talk has surrounded England’s attacking options heading to Germany this summer. The major talking point is who will play on the left wing for Gareth Southgate.
Speaking after United’s 2-0 win over Everton, United legend Wayne Rooney said that although England are “blessed” with attacking options, Greenwood should be in the conversation.
“I think that’s where England are blessed,” Rooney said on TNT Sports. “You look at the attacking players England have got; you know, we haven’t even mentioned Greenwood yet. You’ve got some very good attacking players.”
However, former United centre-back Rio Ferdinand believes that, due to his recent goals, Marcus Rashford should fill the position.
“I’d probably go with Marcus Rashford because he’s got two goals in the last couple of games,” Ferdinand said. “I think it looks like he’s coming to the home straight, and the confidence will be at the best place by the end of this season.”
He continued: “What he gives you in that England team is different from the others; he runs behind. He runs behind (while) Saka prefers it to feet – So does Harry Kane. He’s the gunslinger Harry Kane, but Marcus will give you that little point of difference.
