Manchester United suffered a poor defeat against Newcastle United, despite playing against 10 men for the second half.
Manchester United’s defeat against Newcastle United was the first shocking result under Michael Carrick, and his first loss as the head coach of his former club.
After the game, he said: “I’m really, really disappointed with tonight. We need to learn from it, because it’s a bit of a lesson for us tonight. We’ve got to be better for this.”
Jacob Ramsey was dismissed for two yellow cards towards the end of the first half. But that didn’t stop Anthony Gordon from taking the lead after Bruno Fernandes brought him down in the penalty area.
Despite some questions over the squad’s character after the game, Casemiro’s header quickly levelled the game before the break. Though, United couldn’t capitalise on their momentum and William Osula ensured they paid the price.
Osula burst past Tyrell Malacia in the dying moments of the 90 minutes, before curling the ball past Senne Lammens, who was left unsighted behind Harry Maguire.
United’s squad eager to turn it around
Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox will be in the midst of deciding whether Carrick can be the man to lead United into 2026/27, so the squad’s reaction to the loss will be crucial.
A source of The Sun has said: “The players feel like they let the manager down with the way they played.
“They think the big gaps between games are hurting them and making them struggle to start properly.
“It’s something they are aware of and want to change.”
United’s next game is against Aston Villa in the Premier League. The result will be crucial in their hopes for Champions League qualification.

United must respond spell
The time on the training pitch after the Newcastle United pitch will be interesting for the United squad.
On one hand, they will be distraught about the manner in which they lost, especially after not playing well against Crystal Palace. But on the other hand, they will have more time to adapt to Carrick’s style of play and the demands he puts on them.

The Villa match will give United the opportunity to return to the counter-attacking style of play, which worked so well against Manchester City and Arsenal.
If United are to qualify for the Champions League, they have to beat Aston Villa next week.
