Sporting striker Viktor Gyökeres has addressed links between him and Manchester United amid Rúben Amorim’s admission about the January transfer window.

Manchester United have confirmed Ruben Amorim as their new Head Coach following Erik ten Hag’s departure from Old Trafford.

Though ten Hag’s contract was extended over the summer, a challenging start to the season left United sitting 14th in the Premier League and 21st in the Europa League, leading to his exit on Monday morning.

United acted swiftly to secure Amorim as his successor, with the Portuguese manager officially starting on 11 November as the international break begins.

His first match in charge will be on 24 November, an away fixture against Ipswich Town.

Gyökeres addresses rumours

Since Amorim’s appointment, United have been linked with a possible move for Sporting striker Viktor Gyökeres. Gyökeres has 20 goals and four assists in 16 games this season.

Speaking after the club’s 5-1 league win over Estrela Amadora, in which the 26-year-old Swedish international scored four goals and was nominated as the Player of the Match, he was asked about the links between him and United in recent days.

“Going with Amorim to Manchester United? I don’t know,” Gyokeres explained when asked about possibly joining Amorim at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

“I’m here. As you can see, I enjoy it at Sporting.

“It’s nothing I really think about. I’m sad about him [Amorim] leaving. We wish him all the best.”

Amorim’s January admission

Further, after the game, Amorim fielded questions about his move to United and insisted that United will not sign any Sporting players, including Gyökeres, in the January transfer window.

“Gyokeres costs £100m,” said Amorim. “It’s very complicated. I will not take any of Sporting’s players in January. But that’s another story.”

Sky Germany have reported that although Gyökeres has a release clause of around £84 million, the Portuguese club may be willing to sell him for a fee of between £42-50 million. However, this will depend on the demand for his signature in the summer.
