André Onana has revealed a “very important” hidden talent that he has which helps his Manchester United teammates during games.

Onana, 27, has experienced difficulties since joining United in the summer from Inter Milan, particularly in the Champions League.

However, his performances in the Premier League have been very promising, particularly in recent months — even more so when you consider how active he needs to be in terms of shot-stopping.

The goalkeeper kept his eighth Premier League clean sheet against Everton on the weekend. Afterwards, he discussed how multilingualism is important for communicating with his teammates on the pitch.

“I speak quite a lot [of languages], I think four. Spanish, Italian, English and French. Even if my English is 50/50, I try to do my best,” he explained.

“It is very important to be able to speak with every guy, like, for example, when I speak with Licha [Lisandro Martinez], I speak in Spanish.

“It is good to speak so many because then, with Raphael [Varane], I speak in French.”

The Cameroon goalkeeper then joked: “Sometimes, I then make mistakes because I then speak French with Licha, I have so many languages in my mind!

“It is something that is nice being able to switch between so many languages in the game. But, for me, it is a big honour to be here and to be able to play with these guys.”

Former United defenders Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville have regularly explained the importance of communication in the backline of their successful teams.

Onana’s multilingualism is one string to his bow. Although, he will be hoping that he can showcase some of his other strengths more and more as he continues to adapt to life at Old Trafford.
