André Onana’s reaction to a viral moment from Manchester United’s pre-season has been described by journalist Andy Mitten.

Onana, 27, has had a mixed first season at United. His major struggles came during the club’s Champions League campaign, whilst he has shown promise and better performances in the Premier League.

The goalkeeper had big shoes to fill after the controversial departure of long-term no.1 David de Gea and major question marks were flung over his head before he even played a competitive match.

Onana was highlighted after a mistake during his first Old Trafford game in a pre-season friendly against French side RC Lens.

The goalkeeper was lobbed from just inside the United half after Erik ten Hag’s side were dispossessed. The moment quickly spread across social media.

“Another thing about Onana is about adjusting to playing for a huge club. Ajax are big, football is huge in Cameroon, Inter are big,” explained Andy Mitten on the Talk of the Devils podcast.

“But when he made that mistake against Lens in pre-season, and he went viral, he was like ‘woah’, a pre-season friendly where they’ve played two games over a weekend, and he was like ‘woah’.

“He’s had to adapt to this global ‘you’re great, you’re bad’ and the human mind doesn’t just adjust to that straight away.”

Onana’s mistakes have been focused on this term but he is beginning to find consistency in his game.

Speaking on his difficulties earlier this month, Onana stated: “My teammates always reminded me who I am, the goalkeeper I am, and why I came to Man United.

“They told me, ‘André, it took some players two years, others six months and others no time. You have the personality to turn this situation around’.”
