There are three key reasons why Rúben Amorim wants to sign Matheus Cunha for Manchester United, with the player said to be “swayed” by a key argument.
Manchester United are looking to add attacking reinforcements to Rúben Amorim’s squad this summer as the team continues to struggle with goalscoring, with Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha a reported target.
The club have been linked with strikers such as Liam Delap, Victor Osimhen, and Benjamin Šeško, but are also focused on strengthening their wide positions.
Under Amorim’s system, United operate with a central striker and two wide attacking midfielders. With Alejandro Garnacho out of form and Christian Eriksen set to leave, the need for new attacking options has become more pressing.
The club are reportedly seeking forwards who can play on both wings and offer more creativity, with this responsibility largely falling to Bruno Fernandes in recent matches.
Reports from Monday evening have claimed that United are edging closer to an agreement with the player on personal terms, with Cunha said to be “swayed” to join United due to the appeal of becoming a key player within Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.
There are three primary reasons why Amorim would want to sign Cunha this summer, relating to his position, experience, and age, all of which have been explained below.
#1 – Cunha brings Premier League experience
While United have often shopped overseas for their transfer findings in the last few seasons, their focus has shifted to bringing players who are already in England’s premier competition.
Cunha now has two and a half seasons worth of Premier League fixtures under his belt, having signed for Wolves in January 2023. He has now played 77 times in the competion, netting 28 goals and providing 11 assists in that time.
A big reason Amorim will value the Brazilian’s expeirence of Premier League football is that it will take minimal time for Cunha to adjust to his new surroundings, and will hopefully hit the ground running at Old Trafford.
#2 – He is already familar with his position
Since Amorim took charge of United’s squad in November 2024, many players have struggled to adapt to the change in system, with only a selcet few such as Fernandes, Amad, and Harry Maguire truly udnerstanding what is needed from them in the 3-4-3 formaiton.
However, as well as bringing Premier League experience, Cunha also has expereice playing on the left side of Vitor Pereira’s 3-4-3, which will only add to his ability to have a fast start to life at United should he join the club.
Amorim will be wanting to bring in Cunha with a view to starting him on th eleft of United’s front three, with Amad the current first-choice for the right flank when fit and the club expected to sign a new first-choice striker this summer.

#3 – The perfect blend of age and impact
At 25-years-old, Cunha is a player who is old enough to have significant experience playing at the highest level, with 221 senior appearances across his career, while also being young enough that he still has space to grow further.
Cunha is regarded at United as a player at his peak who could make an instant impact, adding more experience than the younger profile of recruit they are prioritising.
The Brazilian international would be joining United at around the same age Fernandes did, and the club are no doubt hoping that he will be able to have a similar impact under Amorim that the United captain did under Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
