“The plan was…” Senne Lammens reveals Michael Carrick’s biggest strength as Man Utd boss

Michael Carrick has impressed many since taking over from Darren Fletcher and Rúben Amorim as Manchester United head coach.

Despite coming close to losing out on the job to his former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Michael Carrick has impressed many Manchester United fans since he was appointed head coach, with some claiming he should be rewarded with the full-time position in the summer.

On Tuesday evening, Carrick was dealt his worst result since returning to the dugout, although he remains unbeaten for the time being. His United side struggled to break down West Ham United’s defence until Benjamin Šeško saved the day in additional time.

The Slovenian rescued a late point for United by flicking on a cross from Bryan Mbeumo into the top right corner. Joshua Zirkzee came close earlier on – with a headed effort – but it was Šeško who became the hero, as he was against Fulham at Old Trafford.

Carrick’s tenure will not be judged based on the draw against West Ham, but rather his impressive wins against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, despite only having days on the training ground with the squad.

The United squad will still be getting used to Carrick and his methods, but they seem to be much happier than they were in the final days of Rúben Amorim.

Lammens on Carrick’s strengths

Carrick has only managed two clubs: Middlesbrough and Manchester United. Despite being sacked from Boro, he seems to be winning many fans back at Old Trafford, including Senne Lammens.

He told MEN: “I think the way Michael took over against City, especially when he only had two or three days to prepare us [was impressive].

“Just one of his strong suits as well, being clear about what he wants, communication. So we knew what we had to do. The plan was clear.

“So we executed them against the first two games against City and Arsenal… It’s a bit different because it’s a different kind of game today, for example. We don’t really have to make the game ourselves.

“It’s more of being able to be compact and play from the counter and creating chances. That’s one of our strong suits. So we know against those teams we can do good. But then against Fulham and against Tottenham at home, we had to play more of our game. I think we did that.

“We can be happy”

Lammens continued: “Today was a little bit disappointing because we wanted to continue that. Now as well, being two weeks without a game, you want to go in that period with a good feeling.

“It’s a little bit less bad because we scored at the end, but still not the best feeling. But I think the first five games with him as a coach, we can be happy with and looking forward to the rest.”

United must wait 12 days before facing Everton away from home. The reverse fixture saw United lose 1-0 to 10-man Everton due to a Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall wonderstrike.
