Rasmus Hojlund’s post-match comments after Manchester United’s 4-2 victory over Sheffield United last week point to one major improvement in the Old Trafford squad.

In the game, Bruno Fernandes was at his absolute best. Scoring twice, the Portuguese midfielder would round off his performance with a perfect pass to assist Højlund late into the match.

Speaking to Football Focus after the Red Devils‘ victory over the Blades last week, Højlund was full of praise for his captain, highlighting his ability to rise above criticism.

“I just want to tell him: ‘Thanks for the ball, Bruno!'” Hojlund stated. “I was very happy for him [Bruno Fernandes] because he’s also getting a lot of criticism. It’s not fair because he’s doing everything at a top level all the time, and he’s an amazing captain.”

It is Højlund’s gratitude for Fernandes’ ability to pass to him that will be music to Manchester United fans’ ears after reports last month claimed that Fernandes and Højlund had a falling out back in November.

It was noted that the issue between the pair stemmed from Højlund telling coaches at United that Fernandes was not passing him the ball enough.

This issue then escalated after Fernandes sided with club teammate Diogo Dalot after Højlund complained about the defender’s efforts during United’s 4-3 loss to FC Copenhagen.

The report noted that the issue was settled reasonably quickly, and Red Devils fans will be delighted to see evidence of that happening with Hojlund’s post-match interviews.

Fernandes’ assist for Højlund against Sheffield United marks just the first time this season that that pairing has linked up for a goal.

Despite this, Fernandes is currently United’s top assister and goalscorer in the Premier League this season, with 10 goals and 7 assists.

Højlund, meanwhile, is the club’s next top scorer, with eight league goals in his debut season for the Red Devils.
