Teddy Sheringham has urged one of Manchester United’s fiercest Premier League rivals to pursue a top talent from the Red Devils.
Manchester United purchased four new signings during the summer transfer window, and heavily prioritised their attacking department in the process.
The Red Devils bought a new-look front three to eradicate their goalscoring woes, but decided to reject the idea of any midfield incomings for the time being.
Ruben Amorim has come under fire at the start of this Premier League campaign for his decisions regarding his starting XI, as he has left Kobbie Mainoo on the bench in every league fixture so far to accommodate Bruno Fernandes.
In the final week of the window, Mainoo asked the club if he could leave on a season-long loan, although this was denied by United, which has left the young midfielder to feed off scraps for his game time.
Sheringham urges Mainoo to move
When speaking to The Yorkshire Post, Teddy Sheringham decided to make quite a bold claim, and suggested that the 20-year-old Englishman should move to one of United’s fiercest rivals on loan.
Sheringham was asked about whether Mainoo is the type of player Leeds should target, to which he said, “Yes – without a doubt. Not even six months ago, he was in the England set-up and people were raving about him. He can’t be that bad a player.
“He just needs to get someone who loves the way he plays. This game is all about opinions, and just because Amorim doesn’t fancy him, it doesn’t mean to say [Daniel] Farke won’t get the best out of him.
“Put an arm around him and tell him how good he is, team him up with someone in midfield who accommodates him and all of a sudden, you’ve got a player back on your hands. If Leeds could get someone like that on loan, it would definitely be a plus point.”
Will Mainoo minutes improve?
With the Reds blocking any potential loan move for Mainoo in the summer, this indicates that the talented midfielder is a key part of United’s plans for the campaign.
However, Amorim’s side are not in any European competition this season, and have already crashed out of the Carabao Cup, leaving only Premier League and FA Cup fixtures to be played out.

Mainoo’s frustration is completely understandable, as only last summer was he a prominent feature in the England XI, whereas now he isn’t even in the squad.
It should surely only be a matter of time until Mainoo’s first league start, especially considering the recent suspension of Casemiro. Hopefully, when given the chance, the young talent is able to showcase his ability.
