Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia moved to PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window and was far from happy with one of his opponents last time out.

Tyrell Malacia spent nearly 18 months sidelined with a serious knee injury, which required multiple surgeries.

The 25-year-old joined Manchester United in 2022 and was a reliable backup to Luke Shaw in his first season. However, his long absence took a toll.

Since returning earlier this season, it was clear he didn’t meet new head coach Ruben Amorim’s standards. Malacia also struggled to fit the wingback role in United’s system, making regular game-time his priority.

He has moved back to the Netherlands and joined PSV Eindhoven on a loan for the rest of the season. After being used sparingly in his opening weeks, Malacia has broken into the team recently.

Malacia involve in half-time spat during embarrassing PSV defeat

The United loanee has played 90 minutes in three consecutive games after impressing off the bench in the Champions League against Juventus two weeks ago.

However, all of the results have been quite embarrassing for PSV as they have lost against Go Ahead Eagles in the KNVB Cup semi-final as well as in the league. Then, the Dutch side lost heavily against Arsenal in Europe.

Malacia would have been pleased to get 270 minutes under his belt but the 25-year-old was certainly frustrated with how things played out.

Go Ahead Eagles forward Victor Edvardsen caused problems for Malacia and PSV in those two games. He scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 cup victory before adding a goal and assist in the 3-2 league win.

Edvardsen’s quality in the game was not only on display but Dutch reports also suggested that he was “being irritating” for his opponents.

De Stentor claim that Malacia was “so fed up” with Edvardsen and confronted the 29-year-old Swede in their latest clash.

“He said I was talking nonsense and irritating,” Edvardsen told the Dutch outlet when asked about his half-time spat with Malacia.

“But yes, I said, that’s necessary, because we are the smaller club. The players said all sorts of things to me, but that doesn’t bother me. I fight for every ball.”

Malacia needs consistent game-time

Malacia isn’t yet being able to enjoy his football but his recent minutes are definitely positive for his return to full fitness.

The Dutch defender had not completed 90 minutes in a game since the final day of the 2022/23 campaign and he has now done it three times within a week.

That indicates that Malacia is improving and United will be hoping that he can be back to his best levels after completing his loan at PSV.

While it is unlikely that he returns to Old Trafford and stays with Amorim’s squad, Malacia will have a much easier time of finding a permanent move should he prove his fitness levels in the coming months.
