Ruben Amorim has started integrating several young talents into the Manchester United first-team squad but the omission of one starlet is described as “confusing”.

Manchester United are experiencing difficulties this season under Ruben Amorim and injury problems have not helped his cause.

In recent weeks, United’s first-team depth has been so depleted by injuries that many young starlets from the Academy have had to step up.

The likes of Jack Fletcher, Sekou Kone, Jack Moorhouse and Tyler Fredricson have started training with the squad and all appeared on the bench against Spurs last month.

Chido Obi has now made three appearances for the first-team and there are calls for him to start over Rasmus Højlund up front.

Scanlon continues good United form with U18s brace

James Scanlon is another highly talented player at Carrington but the young winger is yet to push into the first-team for significant training time or match experience.

The 18-year-old has been one of the best performing youth players at the club so far this season, with 16 goals and six assists in 23 games.

He was one of the standout players in the latest Under-18s win over Middlesborough – scoring twice in a 3-1 victory on Monday evening.

The teenager can operate on either flank and already has international experience with Gibraltar, making 10 appearances so far for his country.

United staff confused by Scanlon snubs

Scanlon has been overlooked by Amorim for other players in the Academy and this has reportedly perplexed some people in the building at Carrington.

According to a recent report from MailSport, those close to Scanlon have been left “scratching their heads” by his omission in favour of other Academy players.

It was also claimed that some staff at Carrington are surprised the 18-year-old hasn’t received more first-team opportunities despite his impressive form this season.

United only had Obi as an attacking option off the bench against Fulham on the weekend and Amorim failed to use all of his nine available substitutes. He named seven, with two goalkeepers.

While there are no guarantees that any of the young talent in the Academy are prepared to make an impact in the first-team, Scanlon’s physical and technical traits at his age, mixed with the fact he’s already played on the international stage, make it strange that he hasn’t been included in any of the matchday.
