Manchester United have nine days to make a final decision on Sofyan Amrabat as an alternative deal option is proposed by Italian media.

On the final day of the 2023 transfer window, Manchester United announced that they had completed the loan signing of Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat on a loan deal from Serie A club Fiorentina.

United paid an initial £8.5 million loan fee for the signing, with an option to buy the midfielder for an extra £20 million inserted into the contract. At the time, everyone expected this option would be triggered.

However, Amrabat failed to live up to expectations at Old Trafford, and a mix of poor form and injuries meant he only made 30 appearances across all competitions, starting 17 of those – he played fewer minutes than Jonny Evans across the campaign.

By March 2024, fans were almost unanimous in their conclusion that Amrabat’s buy option would not be triggered, but performances towards the end of the season, especially in the FA Cup final, swayed some into thinking that he would be a useful asset to the team.

Fast-forward to the present day, and United still have not activated that buy clause, even once his loan contract expired, which did so at the end of last month.

Although some reports have stated that it is the player’s “dream” to continue at Old Trafford, reports from Italy have stated that United are not looking to activate the clause, even though they still have until 21 July to do so.

However, this does not mean that Amrabat will not be playing for United next season. Erik ten Hag is known to still be a fan of the player despite his poor performances at points during 2023/24, and the Italian media have now suggested that United may be able to secure him on another loan deal.

Prior to signing for the club, Amrabat extended his deal with Fiorentina until 2026, meaning that Fiorentina could sanction another loan deal for Amrabat this summer.

Following his move to United, Amrabat is no longer included in Fiorentina’s plans, which is not surprising considering that the Moroccan international’s priority is to remain at Old Trafford.

United may also try to negotiate a lower fee for Amrabat to buy him permanently, but it remains to be seen if they will take this option.
