Ruud van Nistelrooy has revealed that he spoke closely with Alejandro Garnacho when deciding the starting line-up for Manchester United vs Leicester City.

Manchester United face Leicester City for the second time under Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is taking charge of his final game as interim manager.

He will be expecting a much tougher test than their 5-2 Carabao Cup win over The Foxes, who rotated heavily in that fixture.

Ruben Amorim will be taking charge of the team following his final game with Sporting and starts work on Monday at Old Trafford.

Three points against Leicester would put United in a much better position in the table – they currently sit 13th in the standings.

Van Nistelrooy explains Garnacho conversation

Van Nistelrooy has made just three changes to the team which won 2-0 against PAOK in the Europa League.

Lisandro Martínez and Matthijs de Ligt come back into the defence while Alejandro Garnacho is replaced by Marcus Rashford in the frontline.

Garnacho has 10 goal contributions for United so far this season but has struggled in recent games. He started seven in a row and Van Nistelrooy has decided that he needs some rest.

The interim boss explained ahead of the game that he had spoke ‘closely’ with the Argentine winger about the amount of minutes he has played so far this season and how it will be ‘good for him’ to be able to make an impact off the bench.

“I think so, yes, because he [Amad] did very well, he looked really sharp,” began Van Nistelrooy.

“It has, also, to do with minutes played, speaking closely with Alejandro about all the games and minutes that he’s played so far.

“It’s good for him to come off the bench today, and we’ll have him fresh, hopefully, towards the end of the game. That is the idea behind it.

“Marcus played 30 minutes on Thursday, so he’s kind of fresh as well, so that’s also behind it.”

Garnacho has already proven how impactful he can be as a substitute at United and it seems like the right time to give him that extra rest after a difficult period.
