Ruben Amorim ‘would love to’ reunite with Sporting wonderkid at Manchester United
Ruben Amorim ‘would love to’ reunite with one of his Sporting wonderkids at Manchester United in the future.
Manchester United announced that Ruben Amorim would become the club’s new head coach last week after the departure of Erik ten Hag.
The Portuguese boss will take charge at Old Trafford from 11 November, with his final game for Sporting Lisbon coming this weekend.
United fans got a peak of what they can expect under Amorim after he beat Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
While it was Viktor Gyokeres who got all of the attention following his hat-trick, 17-year-old right wingback Geovany Quenda was also excellent on the night.
He assisted Gyokeres’ first goal and produced a solid display in attack and defence playing against one of the best teams in Europe despite his tender age.
According to the Telegraph, the new boss at Old Trafford would love to be reunited with the talented Quenda in the future as the teenager is being extensively scouted by Premier League clubs.
This follows on from a report in the Manchester Evening News which claims the Reds have been tracking the wingback’s progress since the start of the season.
The 17-year-old wonderkid has a release clause at around £85 million, TeamTalk states. Sporting are unlikely to be open to discussing a lower fee in the January transfer market.
Ironically, that actually would benefit United in their potential pursuit of the teenager after Amorim confirmed that he would not be signing any Sporting players in the mid-season window.
“I’m not going to come for any Sporting player in January. These years at Sporting have been the best years of my life and I won’t forget that,” the 39-year-old told reporters this week.
TeamTalk explains that the chances of Quenda departing for the Premier League in the summer would increase, with Sporting more likely to accept an offer below his release clause then.
Manchester City, Liverpool and Juventus are among the other clubs monitoring the player Amorim has developed in Portugal.
United will be thinking that their new head coach could be the factor which convinces Quenda if they are able to agree a fee with Sporting in the summer.
