Three players can solve the Manchester United issue Rúben Amorim explained after Man City win
Three players can solve the Manchester United issue Rúben Amorim highlighted after Sporting CP’s brilliant win over Manchester City on Tuesday evening.
Last week, Manchester United announced that they had agreed a deal for Sporting CP boss Rúben Amorim to become the club’s new head coach following Erik ten Hag‘s sacking.
The 39-year-old is set to take charge of United from Monday, 11 November, with Ruud van Nistelrooy acting as interim manager until the beginning of the international break.

Clauses within his Sporting contract meant that he could not join the club immediately unless United paid an extra £4 million, so the two clubs agreed that Amorim would take charge of three final fixtures for his current club before transferring to Manchester.
One of these three games was a crucial Champions League tie against Manchester City, in which Amorim’s Sporting side came back from 1-0 down to complete a second-half demolition job of Pep Guardiola’s side, winning 4-1 at their home ground.
Amorim’s United admission
After the result, Amorim was asked what the sporting result could mean for Manchester United. However, he was quick to dismiss this, explaining that he would have to develop a new style of football at Old Trafford.
“What I can tell you is that this doesn’t mean anything in particular,” he told journalists. “Don’t take anything from this.
“We cannot transport one reality to another. Manchester United cannot play the way we play and we will have to adapt.”
However, he also hinted that through these words, he meant that he feels the issue he has is United will not be able to play this defensive style that he had on display against City and that he must improve as a coach and develop a more dominant style of football.
“After Sunday, I will start a new one with a new club,” he continued. “We need to play these clubs in a different way, we can’t defend like this, so I have to improve as a coach but I am very happy and it was a great night.”
Three players that solve Amorim’s problem
Considering this, three players currently within Amorim’s new squad can help the Portuguese manager adapt to a new style of competition in the Premier League, keep his defensive foundations solid, and develop a dominant style.
The first is Lisandro Martínez. The 26-year-old left-footed centre-back is known for being brilliant with the ball at his feet while also maintaining an aggressive nature in his defending, and this may be key for Amorim.
He will be able to fill the gap at left centre-back in Amorim’s famed back three and create fantastic attacking passing angles while maintaining a bullish presence in the defence.
Secondly, Leny Yoro’s emergence at United will complement Martínez brilliantly. The 18-year-old Frenchman has yet to make his debut for the club but is expected to play a big role in United’s long-term plans.
Likely playing as a right centre-back, Yoro is tall and fast with good passing range, which will help him manage the right-sided channel with the aforementioned pair flanking either side of Matthijs de Ligt.
Finally, a third key player who will help Amorim establish his desired football is full-back Noussair Mazraoui. The Morrocan international has astounded United fans since his summer move from Bayern Munich and has shown his proficiency as both a left-back and right-back, as well as in midfield.
Amorim will greatly appreciate Mazraoui’s versatility, defensive nous, and attacking threat. He is an incredibly technical player who understands a wide range of tactics.
Bring it on.
