Ruben Amorim has received a ‘very sad’ setback ahead of his first Manchester United game in the Premier League against Ipswich Town.

Manchester United return to Premier League action this weekend against Ipswich Town in Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge of the club.

The new head coach started his duties last week and will enter an extremely busy winter period for the club which could define the rest of their season.

Amorim has been getting to know the players in his squad in recent days but he is yet to link up with several Reds who jetted off on international duty over the last week.

One of those players is Victor Lindelöf, who has an uncertain future at Old Trafford with less than a year remaining on his contract at the club.

However, the Swedish defender explained that he is not thinking about his long-term future but instead looking ahead to playing under his former Benfica teammate at United.

Unfortunately, during Sweden’s game against Slovakia the 30-year-old was forced to come off the pitch after just 26 minutes after sustaining an injury.

This is a potentially huge blow to Lindelöf, who only recently returned to full fitness from a foot issue, as well as Amorim, who now has one less central defender to choose from for his 3-4-3 formation switch.

Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro are also both currently out of action, while Lisandro Martinez’s fitness levels are unknown after he suffered a knock last time out for United.

It could have been a great chance for Lindelöf to prove himself in the early weeks of Amorim’s tenure but that opportunity now looks like it’s slipped away from the Swede.

“It’s very sad. He just come back from injury and then to get another injury, you suffer with that. It was tough to see,” Swedish teammate Emil Holm said after the game.

“He was very down in the dressing room too. He’s an important man in the team, he’s captain anyway. No, it was a shame.”

When asked if he said anything to the Red Devils defender, the Bologna defender added: “I gave him a hug and told him to get well.”
