Sporting manager Ruben Amorim has responded to links between himself and Manchester United following Erik ten Hag’s sacking.

Erik ten Hag has been sacked as manager of Manchester United after he left his side wallowing 14th in the Premier League and ranked 21st in the Europa League.

While poor performances have been a theme of this season, the Dutchman’s dismissal was triggered by a 2-1 loss against West Ham United in East London.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take over as caretaker manager while United seek a permanent replacement. There is currently little indication as to who this will be.

The club are currently keeping all their options open, although clarification surrounding the mangerial job is expected to emerge over the coming days.

Amorim responds to links

One man who has been linked with United often across the last few weeks is Sporting CP coach Ruben Amorim.

The 39-year-old has been making waves across European football with his Sporting side, and was touted with a move to either West Ham or LIverpool in the summer.

Speakng in a press conference on Monday, Amroim was asked by portugese press on his view of taking over with Ten Hag, but he was dismissive with his reply.

“I was already expecting this question, and obviously, I’m not going to talk about the future because otherwise, I’ll always have to comment,” He explained.

“I’m very proud to be Sporting coach, that’s all.”

Fernandes is a fan

Club captain bruno Fernandes has not hidden his admiration to Amroim and his Sporting side, with the 32-year-old having played for the side himself prior to his United move in 2020.

“Since Mister Amorim arrived at Sporting, it has been one of the teams to play the best football,” the former Sporting midfielder said earlier this month.

“They have been consistent, the signings have been right, and they are in a very good moment. It’s a very well-prepared team.

“In relation to Amorim, he shows that he is prepared at this moment. Coaching Sporting and winning championships is not easy, Sporting went 20 years without winning championships and Amorim arrived and has already won two, this shows that the work has been done well.

“If he could manage to do the same in England, Spain or anywhere else, you will never know until you get there, but I’m sure their qualities are there for everyone to see.”
