Roy Keane has told Erik ten Hag what type of player he should sign next summer following Manchester United’s 4-3 FA Cup win over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United produced an all-time classic as they defeated Liverpool 4-3 in the FA Cup quarter-final, with Alejandro Garnacho scoring a 120th-minute winner at the Stretford End.

The first half of the match began favourably for United, as Erik ten Hag‘s squad continuously challenged the Liverpool defence. This resulted in McTominay’s early goal at the 10-minute mark, following up on Garnacho’s initial shot.

Despite United’s dominance in the first half, Liverpool scored two goals just before half-time. The first came from a deflection off Kobbie Mainoo, leading to Alexis Mac Allister’s goal, while the second was a rebound effort from Mohammed Salah, giving them the lead right before the break.

Speaking on punditry, Roy Keane highlighted a big problem that United have suffered all season – that they have been very open at times.

He then further detailed that Erik ten Hag needs to sign someone who can get in midfield and protect the back four during phases of play that go against the team.

“It was coming. It’s been the biggest worry for United this season – they’ve been so open,” the treble winner explained on ITV. “They need someone to sit; it’s called game management; Liverpool were getting stronger, but United have got to get someone in behind there, protect the back four.”

He continued: “Liverpool haven’t been that great going forward, but if you keep giving them time and space in these areas, they get punished. For United to play out from the back in injury time, it’s criminal.”

United are said to be only targeting signing a midfielder this summer if they sell Casemiro, who has been linked several times with a potential move to Saudi Arabia. Casemiro was ruled out for the game ahead of the fixture with a leg muscle injury.

Whoever joins United will likely need to partner Kobbie Mainoo in the middle of the park, with the 18-year-old and Bruno Fernandes establishing themselves as firm starters week in and week out across 2024 so far.
