Rio Ferdinand reveals Diogo Dalot’s “honest” stance on Rúben Amorim sack as “important” claim made

Diogo Dalot has claimed Rúben Amorim was “important” for the Manchester United squad during his managerial tenure.

Rúben Amorim’s stint in charge of Manchester United will not be remembered happily by many fans of the club, if any at all.

In his first season at the club, Amorim led United to a 15th-place finish in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final, handing Tottenham Hotspur their first trophy since the 2008 Carabao Cup.

In his second campaign, United were forced to dismiss Amorim for comments where he claimed to be the “manager” of the club. Ironically, United’s sacking statement said Amorim had been removed from his role as “head coach”.

However, Diogo Dalot was known to be a supporter of Amorim. The Portuguese full-back was a key player under Amorim, playing as a right-wing-back, left-wing-back, and even in central defence on some occasions.

Ferdinand reveals Dalot’s thoughts on Amorim

Dalot has already made 24 Premier League appearances this season, following 33 matches in the competition the year prior.

“He [Dalot] was really honest about Amorim,” said Rio Ferdinand on his YouTube channel. “And quite surprisingly at times, he told us why that period under Amorim was really important for the way the group is now.”

He continued to say: “He explained it and it was really kind of like, I can see where he’s coming from.

“And I think he’s, it was a really open and honest conversation, man. And we had a laugh and you could just see how much actually the… not only the club, but being in Manchester, the city, is to him now as an individual.

“It’s really nice to see that: the context of what the city actually means to him. Now, he’s the second [active] longest-serving player [at the club].”

Dalot must improve post-Amorim

Under Rúben Amorim, it was easy to feel that Dalot’s role was safe, whether he played well or not, but that same protection isn’t there any longer.

Noussair Mazraoui is yet to start a game since he returned from AFCON, and since Michael Carrick was appointed head coach until the end of the season, but he could replace Dalot sooner, rather than later.

Dalot was withdrawn late on against West Ham United for Joshua Zirkzee. While this was an attempt to throw caution to the wind and win the game, Carrick could’ve taken off Luke Shaw, who wasn’t having his best game. Perhaps his decision to take Dalot off will be telling his in team selection for Everton.

United face Everton on Monday night in their first game at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, following a weekend off due to their FA Cup elimination under Darren Fletcher.
