Rio Ferdinand has agreed with former Manchester United winger Ben Thornley on the players’ shocking lack of concentration against Chelsea.

Rio Ferdinand witnessed Manchester United absolutely collapse in the Premier League after two goals from Cole Palmer in extra time saw the English international thump Erik ten Hag‘s men into the ground.

The first of his two goals was a penalty, unfortunately, given away by Diogo Dalot. However, his second was horrible from the Reds, with Palmer being left unmarked from a corner on the edge of the area before smacking the ball home thanks to a deflection from Scott McTominay.

Speaking on MUTV, former United winger Ben Thornley slammed the players for their lack of concentration and not spotting Palmer on the edge of the area for his third goal of the night.

“Not having someone switched on from the short corner is poor,” Thornley said. “It’s a bad result considering when the board went up, we were cruising and looked comfortable.

“You have to be switched on, and I know the lads have given everything, but you have to be mentally switched on.”

Ferdinand, speaking to TNT Sports after the game, agreed with this sentiment.

“Concentration is an issue, and they have to sort it out,” the legendary defender said. “The 90 minutes came, and I didn’t see Chelsea scoring; you cannot have excuses at this level.

“The set-piece goal is a killer, and I am sure there will be an inquest in that training room.”

The lack of concentration from United’s players in the final moments was shocking. It has been a trend of Erik ten Hag’s campaigns so far, where key players lose their concentration at peak times.
