Jason Wilcox and Rúben Amorim have reportedly been discussing Manchester United’s current on-pitch set-up amid improving results at Old Trafford.
Manchester United enhanced Rúben Amorim’s squad with five senior signings during the summer transfer window.
Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha arrived to improve the attacking options, while Senne Lammens joined to strengthen the goalkeeping unit and has quickly become the club’s first-choice stopper.
Even with over £200 million spent, several weaknesses persist, and United are already laying the groundwork for their plans next summer.
Midfield remains the key area of concern within Amorim’s formation, as the club once more failed to address their long-standing issues in that part of the pitch.
What Amorim and Wilcox said about 4-3-3 change
It has been one year since Amorim first took charge of United’s first-team men’s squad, and every game since has seen the club set up in a 3-4-2-1 formation. However, the inconsistent results since then have led many to believe that his system cannot work in the Premier League.
There have been numerous calls among the United faithful for the head coach to change his formation to a 4-3-3, although Amorim has been steadfast in stating that he will not move from his 3-4-3 formation.
According to The Athletic, the 4-3-3 formation is also a favourite of Director of Football Jason Wilcox, and the 54-year-old has continued to speak to Amorim daily and watch training sessions from the touchline at Carrington.
The report states that amid conversations with Wilcox, Amorim has been setting out his side in a 4-3-3 formation during some training sessions. However, rather than this being their resting formation, it is used instead to help show the players where they should be positioned during certain phases of play.
Amorim is said to have made it clear both in public and privately that his base formation of a back three will not change, although he will evolve his idea over time once he feels the side is ready.
Amorim has been tweaking his system
Over the last six or so weeks, Amorim has tweaked instructions within his system, and it’s no surprise that the side has then gone on to win four of their last seven fixtures and lose just one in that period.
Many of these changes have occurred since Lammens replaced André Onana and Altay Bayındır as the first-choice goalkeeper, with Amorim clearly trusting the Belgian to clear his own area and find his attacking teammates, such as Benjamin Šeško.
Amorim has started to trust his best players, such as Bryan Mbeumo, Amad, and Matheus Cunha, to use their instincts more often, which allows for the team to become more fluid and rotate between multiple formations depending on the game state.
The little tweaks to his overall “idea” in the past two months have worked well and have set United on a much more positive path, although it remains to be seen whether his side can become consistent enough to challenge for Champions League spots.
