Reaveled: The role Glazers played in Michael Carrick appointment, it’s a good sign for Manchester United

The Glazers’ role in appointing Michael Carrick has been revealed as the former midfielder looks to take charge of Manchester United for the rest of the season.

Manchester United parted ways with Ruben Amorim last Monday following some icy comments towards Jason Wilcox after United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road.

In stepped Darren Fletcher to take charge for United’s 2-2 draw against Burnley and FA Cup elimination in their 2-1 loss to Brighton. The 41-year-old is set to return to his role as United U18’s coach rather than retain in the first team coaching set up.

The club are set to announce the appointment of former United midfielder Michael Carrick as caretaker manager for the remainder of the season.

However, the process was not completely simple for United as the Glazers still had their part to do to get the move over the line.

Glazers seal of approval essential in Carrick appointment

According to The Athletic, securing Michael Carrick’s return to Old Trafford needed the official approval of director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada.

The report also reveals that a sign-off from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family was required for the deal to proceed. This confirms the club’s full agreement to bring in Carrick, seeing him as the best fit for the role over other candidates, including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was also in contention.

Fans have been calling for stability behind the scenes at United, so the full agreement among all parties underscores the club’s confidence in the former England international and is also a positive sign of better alignment on future decisions.

Carrick has experience managing at United, as he was in charge for the three games following the sacking of Solskjaer in 2022, winning two and drawing one.

Since then, Carrick has become the head coach at Middlesbrough, leading them to eighth- and tenth-place finishes in the Championship.

How Carrick is suited to Manchester United

Having played for United for 12 years, Carrick is fully familiar with the pressure of wearing a United shirt and the expectations of the club’s managers.

Carrick will be needed to regain fans’ belief, get United playing exciting, attractive football again, and get the best out of the players available.

Recent games have seen a boost in form for Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and Benjamin Sesko, who could feature more under the Englishman as United look for consistency again.

A place in the Champions League is certainly still up for the taking as United currently sit in seventh place in the Premier League, but their next fixtures of Manchester City and Arsenal may prove to be damaging to their European aspirations.
