Real Madrid are reportedly trying to convince Manchester United to sign one player that Rúben Amorim “wants to work with” as part of a farcical £30 million transfer operation.
Manchester United’s summer transfer window is expected to be a busy one, with Rúben Amorim looking to completely overhaul his Old Trafford team.
United are expected to let go of up to ten players this summer, with Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelöf, and Jonny Evans set to leave once their contracts expire. At the same time, outcasts like Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho will be sold to raise funds.
With United’s finances tight, it is thought that the club are looking to sign value-for-money players this summer, with Liam Delap and his £30 million release clause a headline name that the Old Trafford outfit want to secure.
However, Delap is just one of a number of names United are hoping to bring in, with the club targeting multiple forwards, a new midfielder, and potentially a new left wing-back and centre-back in the summer window.
Real Madrid engage in bizarre £30m transfer operation
With United eying the market for potential new left wing-backs this summer, one name who will no doubt crop up is former United Academy star Álvaro Carreras, who departed in January 2024 to Benfica, where he has since excelled.
United have a buy-back clause of around £17 million for the player, with his release clause for every other club set at £45 million, but according to AS, one of his prime suitors, Real Madrid, are looking to bend the rules to secure him for cheaper.
The Spanish report states that Los Blancos are set to attempt to convince United to activate their buy-back clause for Carreras, who has been previously touted as a player Amorim “wants to work with,” this summer in order to circumvent the £45 million release clause.
United would then agree to sell Carreras to Real Madrid for around £30 million in the same summer, landing them over £10 million in profit and seeing Los Blancos sign the player for much cheaper than initially anticipated.
United would not engage in such a farcical move
Considering just how much work United have to do this summer, it seems so far out of the realms of possibility that they would engage in such a farcical affair just to help Real Madrid save money.
Madrid and United went head to head for Leny Yoro last summer, with the La Liga side’s arrogance on full display as they felt their appeal was so much greater that they did not need to lodge a bid higher than United to secure the Frenchman’s signature.
United themselves are said to want a left wing-back, so if they were to choose to activate Carreras’ buy-back clause, it would only be to bring him back to Old Trafford and compete in Amorim’s squad.
The complex nature of the deal would also take up too much of United’s time, which would be better spent making sure they can provide Amorim with the necessary players to secure new signings across the next few months.
