Rúben Amorim mentions £41m star he ‘wants to work with’ at Manchester United, January transfer in place
Rúben Amorim has reportedly mentioned to Manchester United one star he wants to work with as January transfer plans are drawn up.
Rúben Amorim has taken over as Manchester United‘s head coach following Erik ten Hag‘s departure, which left the club in disarray.
Ten Hag was dismissed at the end of last month after United found themselves languishing in 14th place in the Premier League and 21st in the Europa League, significantly trailing their rivals on all fronts.

However, Amorim has yet to officially take charge due to complications with his release clause. He is set to make his debut on the touchline next weekend when United visit Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Sunday, 24 November.
In the interim, Ruud van Nistelrooy stepped in to guide the team, leading them to three wins and a draw before being relieved of his duties to make way for Amorim’s newly assembled backroom staff at Carrington.
A return for Carreras
While Amorim is assessing his squad in relation to who he wants to start in his opening few XIs, there is also much talk about what type of player Amorim will want to sign at the club, with January transfers possibly.
According to CaughtOffside, United have a plan to sign a left-back in January now in place, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia having not been available for the 2024/25 season so far.
The report states that while Chelsea’s Ben Chillwell is a player United’s board admires, Amorim has “mentioned” Benfica left-back Alvaro Carreras as “a target he’d like to work with,” as the 39-year-old is familiar with the player.
Although it’s been reported that Benfica have a £41 million price tag on Carreras, United would be able to sign him for as little is £16 million in January due to a buy-back clause.
United sold the 21-year-old to Benfica in the summer after Erik ten Hag deemed him surplus to requirements, but with Amorim now in charge, United may have to quickly fork out £16 million for Carreras to return.
Carreras responds to links
Last month, Ten Hag confirmed that United were continuing to monitor Carreras and his performances.
“We have to see and assess the situation if he can be an option for us,” the Dutchman said. “But playing at Man United is not so easy, playing in the Premier League for Manchester United is not so easy.
“You need experience, also development. You get development from playing for better clubs and in better leagues.”
Carreras responded to links: “I only think about Benfica. I’m only focused here. I’ll try to keep up the same level, try to help the team as much as possible. I’m just another player on the team.”
