Real Madrid have just made a transfer decision that may help Rúben Amorim solve a big problem in Manchester United’s defensive line.

Manchester United have endured persistent left-back troubles over the past 18 months, with both Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw frequently unavailable.

Former boss Erik ten Hag had been forced to get inventive with his team selections, turning to Diogo Dalot, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Lisandro Martínez to cover the position since early this year.

United have been unable to call upon either Shaw or Malacia throughout 2024. Malacia has been sidelined for roughly 18 months due to ongoing knee issues, while Shaw has been plagued by recurring calf and hamstring injuries.

It has been reported that United are looking to sign a new left-back as soon as possible, and a move in the January market may be possible if the right deal comes along.

Real Madrid’s transfer decision

Real Madrid are well known for making big and bold transfer decisions, whether that be buying unproven stars such as Vinicius Jr. or selling club legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro.

This summer, United and Madrid are looking as if they may be going head-to-head for left-back Alphonso Davies, but the Spanish club have just made a transfer decision that could see United avoid a battle with the La Liga giants.

According to Cadena SER via theMadridZone, Madrid are set to sell their current left-back Ferland Mendy, with reports suggesting that Carlo Ancelotti is “fed up” with the France international.

This move is designed to make way for Davies, as although United are in the race, Madrid is currently seen as his ideal desination.

Solves Amorim’s issue

The potential transfer availability of Mendy solves the pressing issue of left-back for Rúben Amorim.

At 29, Mendy is reaching the peak of his career, and at United, many feel that Academy star Harry Amass is a youngster with the potential to reach the status of a first-team left-back in the next two years.

This is where Mendy’s age acts in his favour, as at 29, he won’t be doing too much to block the path of Amass, assuming that Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are either moved on or relegated to a bench role across the next few seasons.

Beyond this, Mendy previously shone as an attacking full-back for Lyon, which slots into Amorim’s wing-back system. Although a price tag is not menioned, come the summer Mendy will only have two years left on his contract, which could help United negotiate a reasonable fee.
