Manchester United consistently fail to get the best out of their big-money signings due to “external and internal” problems.

That’s the belief of former Manchester City defender and Premier League winner Micah Richards, who discussed United’s transfer missteps over the last decade.

Speaking on the panel of CBS Sports during Borussia Dortmund’s 1-0 victory over PSG, the topic of the on loan from Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho was discussed in depth.

Against PSG, Sancho, 24, had one of the finest performances of his career, demonstrating a level of talent he failed to showcase at any point during his time in Manchester.

Sancho, who signed for United for over £70 million, ultimately failed to replicate the form he showed before the start of his Red Devils’ career.

This drop in form is something Richards believes is down to issues within the club, with Sancho just one of several names to fail to impress at the Premier League side.

Using three midfielders to highlight his point, Richards selected Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Casemiro as players that the club have let down.

“Look at how many great players Man United have had over the years,” Richards told his CBS Sports co-hosts. “Pogba went there. When he was at Juventus, I played against him, he was one of the best players in the world. He goes to Man United, it doesn’t work out for him.

“Fernandes is being slaughtered in the media at times, he’s performing now in a team where he’s frustrated. Casemiro goes there from Real Madrid, he’s not the same Casemiro. They’ve got internal and external problems at Man United.”

The trio of Casemiro, Pogba and Fernandes cost United a total £191.6 million, with all of the trio having clear issues throughout their time in Manchester.

Pogba, spent six seasons at the club, before leaving for Juventus for a second time. The World Cup winning midfielder would help win three trophies for the club in his first season, before United went on an extensive trophy drought for the remaineder of his time at the club.

Casemiro, had a largely impressive first season at the club. But, this year he has become a constant figure of mediocrity, failing to reach anywhere near the level expected of a five-time Champions League winner.

Indivually, Fernandes is the only undeniable sucesss. The current Manchester United captain has 143 goal contributions in 230 games for the club, yet has spent his prime years in a United team that has frequently failed to impress.

Like Casemiro, Fernandes only has a Carabao Cup to show for his time at United so far, with the Portuguese international playing the entirety of both the Europa League 2021 and FA Cup 2023 final defeats.
