Premier League record-breaker set for move with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur interested

There is a “strong likelihood” that one former Premier League record-breaker will join either Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Manchester United have experienced a difficult season, beginning under Erik ten Hag and continuing into the tenure of Rúben Amorim.

Despite poor performances, first-team players often find themselves remaining in the starting side due to the lack of squad depth.

The only options available to Amorim have been inexperienced academy players who aren’t ready to start in the Premier League.

With the summer transfer window fast approaching, the recruitment team will know they have to bring in new players to add to and support the first team.

United and Tottenham in race for Gomes

Just last month, Amorim said, “to do something [in the transfer window], we need to sell players,” so United need to utilise the free agent market in the coming summer.

Reinforcement is needed across the pitch, no less in midfield. Injuries to Toby Collyer, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte have left United short in midfield at points this season.

Angel Gomes looks set to leave Lille at the end of the season, with a move to the Premier League looking most likely.

As reported by Ben Jacobs for GiveMeSport, Premier League clubs are “chasing” Gomes for his signature.

United and Tottenham Hotspur appear to be the teams at the front of the queue for the Carrington graduate.

While Gomes has yet to decide on his future club, both United and Spurs are considered to have a “strong likelihood” of adding the England international to their squad.

Gomes could return after five years away

Gomes left United in the summer of 2020 on a free transfer to the French side, LOSC Lille, despite initially breaking a record by becoming the first player born in the 2000s to play in the Premier League.

After his season-long loan at AFC Boavista in Liga Nos, the 24-year-old has enjoyed several good seasons at Lille.

Having now developed into a deep-lying playmaker, Gomes could return to United as the midfield conductor in Amorim’s system.

In recent games, Bruno Fernandes has been deployed alongside either Casemiro or Ugarte in an attempt to gain more control of the ball.

Signing Gomes would allow Fernandes to return to the front three, giving United more attacking options and threat in the final third.
