Premier League confirm Manchester United vs Tottenham referees, Lisandro Martínez must be careful
The Premier League have confirmed the match referees as Manchester United welcome Tottenham to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester United have had a mixed start to the season, winning only two of their first five Premier League fixtures and drawing their opening Europa League match.
Their wins came against Southampton and Fulham, but they were held to a draw by Crystal Palace and suffered losses to Brighton and Liverpool. In the Europa League, they drew with FC Twente.
The team’s most convincing performance was a 7-0 triumph over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup, achieved at Old Trafford two weeks ago.
Match officials
Chris Kavanagh (pictured below) will referee on Saturday at Old Trafford. Kavanagh was the man on VAR when United visited Selhurst Park last weekend, where Lisandro Martínez was controversially not handed a red card for a two-footed tackle.
Knowing this, Kavanagh may keep a particular eye on the Argentinian international, who must be careful against Tottenham.
Last season, Kavanagh officiated three Manchester United fixtures, with Ten Hag’s side winning two of these.
The first came right at the beginning of the 2023/24 season, in a 1-0 loss at home against Crystal Palace. However, the next two were both victories, coming in a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford and
Lee Betts and Richard West will be on the sidelines, acting as Kavanagh’s assistant referees during the game. Darren Bond has been handed the fourth official job, separating Erik ten Hag and Ange Postecoglou on Sunday evening.
Craig Pawson has been appointed as the video assistant referee. Simon Long will act as assistant VAR.
