Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford was praised by Peter Schmeichel for the reaction to his surprise substitution in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
The United forward has faced criticism from sources outside of the club this season for his attitude on the pitch, with Rashford becoming prone to appearing disinterested.
Despite the criticism that has surrounded the winger, he would have an integral part in Rasmus Højlund’s opening goal against Spurs before going on to score United’s second goal deep in the first half.
Following a quieter second-half performance, Rashford would be withdrawn for Antony in the 88th minute.
It was a substitution that Peter Schmeichel would tell Premier League Productions didn’t, “Make sense to me whatsoever.”
The decision also seemed illogical to Rashford, with the Englishman appearing visibly aggravated over Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag’s decision. A reaction Schmeichel would go on to praise the Englishman for.
“I was very, very happy to see that reaction,” Schmeichel stated. “I know it sounds a bit silly that I’m saying that, but I was very, very happy because like too many people who care for Manchester United we’ve started to question his desire, does he really want to be there?”
“We’ve seen games where his body language has been so bad. For him, in a game, I thought he played okay today. There was something different about him today, I think the little link-up with [Rasmus] Hojlund was brilliant, it created two goals.”
“For him to have that reaction after being taken off was brilliant, it was nice to see a little bit of, ‘Why has he taken me off?’. I like that.”
