Paul Scholes names immediate “problem” Rúben Amorim has with two Manchester United stars ‘in trouble’
Paul Scholes has pinpointed an immediate issue Rúben Amorim will have to deal with once he becomes Manchester United’s new head coach.
With Rúben Amorim poised to take over Manchester United’s first team after Erik ten Hag’s exit, there’s much to consider.
As Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s vision for United starts to take shape nearly a year into his ownership, many expect Amorim to overhaul the squad that Ten Hag spent the last two and a half seasons building.

In the months ahead, Amorim is set to evaluate his roster closely, deciding which players fit his vision and which are expendable.
Amid ongoing speculation about who the 39-year-old will keep, sell, or bring in during upcoming transfer windows, much of the focus is on which current players can adapt to Amorim’s signature three-at-the-back system.
Scholes’ immediate problem
Speaking ahead of the club’s 2-0 victory over PAOK in the Europa League, Paul Scholes discussed which players will suit Amorim’s system and who may miss out.
When focussing on the defence, Scholes pointed out that Amorim’s three centre-back set up means that he often plays with wing-backs rather than defensive full-backs, and that this could cause a problem.
“We talk about systems; I’m pretty sure you talk about the back three; we’ve got six centre-hards that can choose from that,” Scholes said.
“It’s never something that’s really happened here, but it’s what he does. He’s got the two central midfielders in Casemiro, and Ugarte, it’s the wing-backs that could be a problem for me.”
Scholes explained that if Amorim desires attacking wingers who will also run back and defend, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford may be in trouble.
“Does he want more attacking wingers who will run back? If he wants that, I’m not sure Rashford and Garnacho are right for that. Does he want two wing-backs in Dalot and Mazraoui, for instance, who might be a little bit better defensively but not as good going forward?”
Change the mentality?
Further, Scholes explained that Amorim must look to change the mentality of some players in the side, focusing on the squad’s attacking quadrant.
“He’s going to have to change the mentality of some players; I think a lot, I think I’d say three or four of the players, at least, especially forward players, don’t want to do the ugly side of the game.
“Now, he’s going to have to make them do that. He’s going to have to look into his eyes and say, I believe every word this coach tells me, and they’re going to have to do that.”
