Paul Scholes has highlighted a major “concern” at Manchester United this season, and it has occurred in every Premier League game so far.

Manchester United endured a 3-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon in a disappointing performance from Erik ten Hag’s team.

This follows on from a narrow victory against Fulham at Old Trafford and a defeat to Brighton away from home.

Question marks still surround Ten Hag and his system, but Paul Scholes is concerned about why the manager is substituting his centre-backs in games.

In all three Premier League games so far, the Dutch manager has adjusted United’s backline. Firstly, he was bringing off Harry Maguire for Matthijs de Ligt, and on Sunday, it was the other way around.

“If you have a centre-half who can’t get through a game, that’s a concern,” Scholes told Premier League Productions, as per the Metro.

“That tells me you’re not fit enough straight from the off. Back fours should always stay on early.

“You may bring a full-back off here and there, but two centre-halves should be there for the full game, and it’s been the first three games that they’ve changed it [during the game]. How can a centre-back not be fit enough?

“You have the excuse of the Euros, and you can say it takes a bit of time to get going, but Liverpool had players there as well. Other teams had players there – you don’t see them struggling.”

It certainly isn’t ideal, but it will likely not be something that continues to happen. De Ligt is clearly the preferred option but also didn’t play any pre-season.

After the international break, the Dutch defender will likely come into the team permanently, and fewer changes in-game will be made.

However, United have other concerns in their team, particularly the lack of goalscoring in the team and the structure in the team’s build-up play.
