Matthijs de Ligt reveals brilliant reason he wanted to join Man United, INEOS will be pleased
Matthijs de Ligt has revealed one brilliant reason why he wanted to join Manchester United, and INEOS will be pleased.
De Ligt, 25, finalised his transfer to Manchester United on Tuesday evening, with the player set to make his debut against Fulham on Friday in the Premier League opener.
Bayern Munich and the Red Devils agreed to a deal worth an initial £38.6 million, plus £4.2 million in easily attainable add-ons.
The Dutch defender will bring essential quality and depth to United’s defence following Raphaël Varane’s departure from Old Trafford.
Speaking to club media after signing, De Ligt explained that the opportunity to be part of the new INEOS project was one of the things that convinced him of the move.
“I actually really like the project,” he revealed. “I think besides that, they are an amazing club – like one of the biggest clubs in the world – with an amazing history.
“A lot of amazing players, amazing defenders. To have the chance to play for this club in this competition.
“It’s always nice to go somewhere and feel that you’re part of a new project, a part of something new.
“Hopefully, me, but also the other players who are coming in this summer, can give a great piece to the next history of Manchester United and get the club back where it belongs – on top.”
The defender will likely line up alongside Lisandro Martínez in the heart of United’s defence, with Leny Yoro providing stern competition once he returns from injury.
Asked how excited he is to get started, De Ligt added: “I’m really excited. I waited a long time. My whole vacation, I was waiting for the message that it was a done deal.
“Now, finally, it is, and I can’t wait to start.”
