Patrick Dorgu is receiving a unique boost from Rúben Amorim as Manchester United prepare to face Tottenham in a Premier League away fixture on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester United are gearing up for a crucial return to Premier League action as they travel to North London to face Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.
The two sides have already played out a dramatic contest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season, with Spurs emerging victorious in a pulsating 4-3 thriller that saw Rúben Amorim’s men bow out of the Carabao Cup.
Both clubs have endured an uncharacteristically difficult campaign, languishing in 13th and 14th place in the table, with United holding a slender two-point advantage over their hosts.
With tensions running high, Sunday’s encounter promises to be a defining moment for both managers—Amorim looks to cement his authority and build momentum at Old Trafford, while Postecoglou finds himself under increasing pressure, with Spurs fans growing restless over their side’s struggles.
Dorgu has been receiving a unique boost
In the winter transfer window, United collected two new recruits as Ayden Heaven joined from Arsenal and Patrick Dorgu signed from Lecce, although the former is thought to be a player who will impact in the coming months, while Dorgu has already made his debut.
The 20-year-old started as a right wing-back against Leicester City but came off after 45 minutes, but many are hoping that he will start on the left as United kick off in North London on Sunday.
When Amorim joined the club in mid-November, many players only had a few training sessions before with the head coach before being thrown into fixtures with the new 3-4-3 system, and Amorim has been keen to stress that his players have been quite literally learning on the job as they have had no training sessions.
This is something Diogo Dalot alluded to recently when he mentioned that, often, the players have had to be coached in the new formation during games themselves as there has been almost no opportunity for training.
However, with Dorgu having arrived in late January, he has received a rather unique boost compared to the rest of the squad in that his first impressions of playing in Amorim’s system have mostly come in training sessions.
The Denmark international had three sessions with his teammates before the 45 minutes against Leicester, while he has now had a further five this week, which is more than the United squad had during their opening six weeks under the 40-year-old.
This will be allowing Dorgu to understand his role in the team behind closed doors rather than with the scrutiny of elite competition on him, which will be a huge boost for his confidence.
Amorim must start Dorgu on the left for balance
Despite Amorim’s decision to start the wide man on the right against Leicester, the head coach must allow Dorgu to play on the opposite side against Tottenham.

Last time United faced Spurs away from home, Bruno Fernandes started as the left attacking midfielder, and Pedro Porro left the captain plenty of space on that flank, and if the same happens again, this is space that Dorgu can attack.
Should Alejandro Garnacho start as the left attacking forward and Dorgu as the left wing-back, the pair could combine to create multiple attacking opportunities, with Dorgu’s left foot working as an option from the byline and Garnacho cutting in on his right foot.
“He [Amorim] can definitely improve on the left-hand side, the right side with Amad has been going quite well, and that can only improve if he can add the players he desires to that team,” former United defender Paul Parker said earlier this week.
“The left side definitely needs somebody more attacking based. The new lad [Dorgu] could be that player if he’s allowed to play in the position that suits him. A left-footed player on the left-hand side with the ability to go round the outside rather than inside.
“It would be nice to have someone to try and get to the byline and deliver a ball. Nottingham Forest are a team that excite people because the cross the ball, they don’t dribble across the box and try and bend the ball in the far corner every time.”
