Owen Hargreaves has criticised two “unbelievable” mistakes from Erik ten Hag in Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat against Brighton.

The Reds suffered last-minute heartache in their second Premier League match of the season against the Seagulls.

United controlled the game early on, but Brighton took the lead in the latter stages of the first half after a lapse in concentration from the visitors.

Erik ten Hag’s team equalised in the second half through Amad Diallo and appeared to have scored a second goal, but it was controversially disallowed due to a strange offside call involving Joshua Zirkzee.

Brighton then delivered a crushing blow in the final minutes, scoring a winner that exposed the United defence.

Hargreaves, who spent four years at Old Trafford, believed that two of Ten Hag’s substitutes were not good and had a part to play in the defeat.

Both Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes were brought off. Despite the former making a mistake in the first-half, he was much better in the second half.

Hargreaves said that Fernandes looked shocked when he was subbed. Fans are not familiar with the Portuguese captain exited the game early.

“I think they [Man United] lost it on the subs,” Hargreaves told Premier League Productions.

“Bruno Fernandes’ face was unbelievable; he was thinking, “You’re taking me off?”. Then he took Harry Maguire off, which affected the shape.

“The subs from Hurzeler were positive, even at a point when most people thought the game was over.”

United’s final game before the international break is against Liverpool at Old Trafford and they will need to provide a strong reaction.
