Fabrizio Romano’s latest update surrounding Matheus Cunha’s potential move to Manchester United confirms that the player is one step away from joining Rúben Amorim’s team.
Manchester United are looking to add attacking reinforcements to Rúben Amorim’s squad this summer as the team continues to struggle with goalscoring.
The club have been linked with strikers such as Liam Delap, Victor Osimhen, and Benjamin Šeško, but are also focused on strengthening their wide positions.
Additionally, United are reportedly targeting Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker Matheus Cunha, who could bring versatility and creativity to the forward line.
Under Amorim’s system, United operate with a central striker and two wide attacking midfielders. With Alejandro Garnacho out of form and Christian Eriksen set to leave, the need for new attacking options has become more pressing.
The club are seeking forwards who can play on both wings and offer more creativity, with this responsibility largely falling to Bruno Fernandes in recent matches.
United ‘one step’ from signing Cunha
Amid United’s want for Cunha, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that United are leading the race for the Brazilian, with United only needing one extra step to secure the player.
With Wolves demanding his price tag and seeing this fee as the forward’s market value, United already know the fee they have to pay, meaning the only significant hurdle they must jump is agreeing on personal terms with the player.
“Newcastle, Manchester United, both clubs wanted him. But now, today, we can say that Manchester United are leading the race to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves,” Romano revealed on his YouTube channel.
“Matheus Cunha signed the new deal at Wolverhampton in January, but his release clause is £62.5 million, so no need to negotiate with Wolves. Maybe they can talk about the closure structure and all of the payment terms, all these sorts of things.
“But in terms of agreement, the agreement has to be done with the player, not with the club in this case, because there is a clause.”
Does Cunha want to join United?
Furthermore, Romano provided additional details about a recent meeting between Cunha’s representatives and the club, revealing that the relationship between Cunha and Amorim is “excellent,” suggesting that the 25-year-old is keen to join Old Trafford.
“I can tell you that in the last 48 hours, Man United had fresh contacts with the agents of Matheus Cunha, and it’s been really positive, because the project explained by Manchester United to the agents of the player, the feeling between Matheus Cunha and Ruben Amorim is excellent,” Romano continued.
“Someone is telling me that there was some sort of great connection between Man United, between the club, between the coach, and between the player.
“So, it was a very positive contact between Manchester United and Cunha, and today, because of this meeting, we can consider Manchester United ahead of Newcastle, and also the other clubs interested in Mateusz Cunha.
Romano added: “My understanding is that Man United will push to get this deal done soon in the market. So, I don’t expect Cunha to be one of the cases that we will discuss in July, August, till the final days of the market. I think Man United will try to be fast.”
