It has been reported that Manchester United will likely not announce a decision on Mason Greenwood’s future until after the season has finished.

Manchester United‘s Mason Greenwood was arrested on charges of assault, attempted rape in January 2022 and further arrested in relation to threats to kill, and has not played for the club since.

Greenwood recently had all charges against him dropped, with a statement from a spokesperson of the Crown Prosecution Service saying: “In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case.”

Manchester United in turn released their own club statement, saying: “Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped.

“The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”

With many questioning when this process would in fact be complete, it has been revealed by ESPN that the club are “unlikely” to announce any concrete decision regarding Mason Greenwood until the summer.

It was further said that a significant factor in this decision is that Erik ten Hag does not want any distractions in relation to his squad and their continued campaign, with a trip to Barcelona on Thursday and a Carabao Cup final later this month.

In relation to the decision of whether or not to reintegrate Mason Greenwood into the first team set-up, it has been said by ESPN that the club will consult the leadership contingents of both the men’s and women’s Manchester United teams.

Although there has not been a “collective view” put forward by players within the club, multiple reports have stated that some within the dressing room of the men’s camp have concerns in relation to Greenwood’s potential return.

It was reported yesterday by The Times that the original footage that was spread on social media of Mason Greenwood disturbed those in the women’s team, with other female members of staff within the club voicing concerns about the topic of Greenwood being reintroduced into the side.

“United’s own investigation will be wide-ranging, including looking into the circumstances surrounding his arrest,” detailed ESPN’s piece on the matter.

Whether or not Mason Greenwood does re-join the first team set-up or not, it is wise for the club to delay any announcement until after the season has finished, as it would no doubt disturb the brilliant work Erik ten Hag has undertaken at the club so far.

“In this moment, I can’t give comment about the process. I can’t say anything about it. I refer to the statement of the club and at this moment I can’t add anything,” Ten Hag said in a press conference on 3 February when questioned on the topic.
