Napoli receive bizarre Scott McTominay warning, it goes against his time at Man United
Napoli have received a bizarre warning about their new midfielder Scott McTominay which goes against his time at Manchester United.
Scott McTominay moved to Napoli in the summer in a £25 million deal as Manchester United decided to part ways with the Academy graduate.
The midfielder had been linked with a move away the summer beforehand but ended up staying at Old Trafford and making a significant impact in the 2023/24 campaign.
Those performances seemed to influence Erik ten Hag, who was desperate to keep the Scotsman, but the financial fair play rules meant that a homegrown sale would help United greatly and so McTominay moved to Italy.
Since then, the 27-year-old has had a solid start to life in Naples. Antonio Conte’s team top the Serie A table and McTominay has started four of the six league fixtures he’s been available for.
The former United star is being utilised in an advanced midfield position rather than deeper – this is what many wanted to happen during his career at Old Trafford.
Especially under Ten Hag, McTominay showed his talents inside the penalty box and running forward with the ball but was unconvincing when deeper as part of the midfield pivot.
Yet, journalist Ciccio Marold has criticised Conte’s use of McTominay in higher positions and believes that he should be playing deeper.
He said, as relayed by CalcioNapoli24: “McTominay? He gets lost there. I don’t agree with those who see him as a second striker, if he is moved away from midfield the team is weakened.”
It is a bizarre point to make considering Napoli’s success in this system and McTominay’s history with playing in that deeper position.
He can certainly do it, but it seems that Napoli coach Conte has worked out the best way for McTominay to shine in his team.
