Rúben Amorim has provided the latest on Matthijs de Ligt as Manchester United prepare to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

Rúben Amorim is navigating a tough period as Manchester United’s inconsistent form continues to raise concerns.

After a stunning derby victory over Manchester City, United’s momentum was halted by a 4-3 Carabao Cup defeat at Tottenham and a crushing 3-0 loss to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

The results leave the team sitting 13th in the Premier League, their lowest-ever position at Christmas in the competition’s history.

Their next test comes on Boxing Day with an away trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Despite being 18th in the table, Wolves have shown renewed energy under new boss Vítor Pereira, who marked his arrival with a dominant 3-0 win over Leicester City.

Amorim provides update on De Ligt

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Amorim mentioned that centre-back Matthijs de Ligt continues to be sick after he missed the side’s last two games through illness, as well as discussing the continued rotation of his players.

“In this moment, it’s not rotation to see the players and prepare the future,” he said. “It’s simply to not have injuries. Matthijs is sick. Harry Maguire did 90 minutes against [Manchester] City and cannot play three days before because, in three months, he only did 90 minutes one time against City.

“So we have to rotate him during the week and today [Sunday] he is playing. Kobbie Mainoo played, he returned from injury, so I have to think if he’s ready to cope with both games so, sometimes, I have to play two games at the same moment.

Rasmus [Højlund] played two games, the third game today [Sunday], and I think we needed fresh legs.”

Victor Lindelöf remains out after suffering an injury against Tottenham, while Luke Shaw is not expected back until early next year.

It was recently revealed that Mason Mount has suffered another injury in his leg and that he may be out until March 2025.

Marcus Rashford has missed United’s last three games, with Amorim citing his squad omissions as a “selection” issue.

Rayan Ait-Nouri is set to return for Wolves after serving a one-game ban, while Mario Lemina missed their win over Leicester but is likely to be available. Enso Gonzalez, Sasa Kalajdzic, Yerson Mosquera, Pablo Sarabia, and Boubacar Traore are all out of the tie.
