Mason Greenwood’s transfer from Manchester United to Marseille includes five separate clauses, including a buy-back for the Old Trafford club.

In January 2022, Mason Greenwood was arrested on suspicion of rape, assault, and coercive control after videos and voice recordings surfaced on social media alleging domestic abuse against his partner.

Manchester United promptly suspended Greenwood and placed him under house arrest while the Crown Prosecution Service conducted an investigation. In early 2023, the charges were dropped due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence that undermined the likelihood of a conviction.

Following an internal investigation, United concluded it was best for Greenwood to continue his career elsewhere. He was subsequently loaned to La Liga club Getafe, where he performed impressively.

This led to a transfer to Ligue 1 side Marseille, where it has now been revealed that the club have inserted five separate clauses into the player’s transfer deal.

The Telegraph details that Greenwood’s transfer fee is £19.9 million, with add-ons totalling a further £6.7 million. Around £3.4 million of this will go to United should he stay at the Ligue 1 side for more than three years.

Secondly, United have retained a buy-back clause, although the chances of this being activated are very low. It is merely a standard addition when any academy product is sold.

Another interesting detail is that Getafe will receive 20 per cent of the proceeds United gains from Greenwood’s sale following his season-long loan at the La Liga club.

Although United originally valued the player at around £40 million, they accepted a lower fee due to Marseille’s willingness to include a sell-on clause that would mean United would gain around 50 percent of any sale Marseille sanctioned should Greenwood be sold.

According to Ben Jacobs, United also have the option to buy further percentages of any future sale should they choose to do so, totalling to the fifth clause in the 22-year-old’s Marseille transfer.
