Manchester United are looking to offload Mason Greenwood from their books this summer following his Getafe loan move last summer.

Greenwood, 22, is anticipated to leave United this summer following a loan spell with Spanish club Getafe during the 2023/24 season.

The club is reportedly seeking approximately £40 million for the forward, who netted eight goals in La Liga last season and impressed those who watched.

Interest in Greenwood has emerged from multiple leagues, with significant attention from Italian clubs such as Lazio, Juventus, and Napoli. However, current reports state that Marseille are the closest, having submitted a verbal bid.

This is according to Fabrizio Romano, who explained that talks are underway between the two clubs, with Greenwood’s being Marseille’s “main target” for a transfer this summer.

It is said that an agreement is getting closer and that United are open to a loan with an obligation to buy with a sell-on clause included in the deal.

Further reports from The Athletic now state that Greenwood met with the club’s footballing leadership on Monday morning as the club commenced their pre-season training.

It is claimed that he arrived, held the meeting, and left following what was called a “brief discussion” and that there was never any expectation that he would train with the team.

It is reported that the meeting consisted of “constructive dialogue” regarding where Greenwood can resume his career, with there being no expectation of him re-joining the club he graduated from as a teenager.

This report is further backed up by the Manchester Evening News. “Mason Greenwood briefly returned to the Manchester United training complex for the first time in two-and-a-half years today to discuss his probable departure,” their report reads.

“Greenwood did not participate in the United first team’s first training session of pre-season as the club have received bids from Lazio and Marseille for the forward.

“It is understood United are in advanced talks with Marseille and the club held constructive talks with Greenwood about his future.”
