Manchester United have been slammed for “misplaced arrogance” following a coaching hiring decision sanctioned by Erik ten Hag in the summer.

Manchester United have undergone numerous changes at the top, with Dan Ashworth, Jason Wilcox, and Omar Berrada all stepping into senior roles. Now, the club are also restructuring the coaching staff supporting Erik ten Hag.

This summer, four new coaches have arrived at Old Trafford. Rene Hake and Ruud van Nistelrooy have joined as assistant coaches, Andreas Georgson has come on board as a first-team coach, with a reported emphasis on set pieces, and Jelle ten Routwelaar has taken up the role of goalkeeper coach.

At the same time, Benni McCarthy, Mitchell van der Gaag, Richard Harris, and Steven McClaren have all departed, signalling a significant change of guard behind the scenes at both Old Trafford and Carrington.

Hake’s appointment was particularly surprising, considering that he already held a position as the manager of Go Ahead Eagles, with some questioning why he would take an assistant manager position, having already been in a managerial role.

Now, Go Ahead Eagles technical director Paul Bosvelt has slammed the club for taking so long to propose the move, as it delayed their search for a replacement.

“I thought it was very strange it took so long for Manchester United to come forward,” Bosvelt told Voetbal International. “A bit of misplaced arrogance.”

However, Hake himself explained when he joined why he chose to take the assistant manager position, citing the chance to work at Manchester United as a huge pull.

“The first question – if you wanted to join – this was a no-brainer in that way,” he admitted in August. “But I already told you I can work at this level. And, of course, I’ve been managing. So I know what it takes to be in that role.

“So in that way, you can also make your mind up about what he [Ten Hag] is thinking and in that way, I think it can also be easier for us to help the manager to do the right things and to help him to make the best choices in everything we do together.

“Our experience as managers, I think, can help a lot with that, because it’s also part of our job to help the other staff members and to find solutions in there to bring that to a good level and, from there on, to continue that to the final decision for the manager.”
