Manchester United’s transfer plan for Antony revealed after Jadon Sancho return
Manchester United’s transfer plan for winger Antony has been revealed after Jadon Sancho returned to the club.
Antony signed for United in the summer of 2022 for a staggering £85 million after a summer-long saga with Ajax.
He has, so far, been largely underwhelming for Erik ten Hag’s side. He scored just one Premier League goal last season despite being a regular in the side for most of the campaign.
Jadon Sancho has also failed to impress since his £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 and looked set leave the club this summer.
He has not played for United since last August after he publicly accused Ten Hag of lying and suggesting that he was the club’s ‘scapegoat’. Once the Dutchman was confirmed as INEOS’ choice to move forward it seemed like there was little chance of a return for Sancho.
Yet, it was revealed last week that the 24-year-old had returned to Carrington to train with the squad and that he and the manager had put their problems behind them.
While this is a boost for Sancho, who now must prove his quality, there are question marks about having both him and Antony remain at the club.
According to ESPN, the Brazilian winger will in fact be allowed to leave Old Trafford on loan this summer as long as a club is prepared to cover his £70,000-a-week salary.
One of the question marks surrounding this report has been the wages attributed to the United player, however, this could be taking into account the wage drop amongst the squad after failing to qualify for the Champions League this season.
This is something that makes sense. It was always unlikely that anyone would pay enough to convince United to sell Antony, but Sancho’s return has made an exit seem like more of a priority.
With the likes of Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho also able to excel from the right-wing, Antony’s game-time would be far from secure at United next season.
A potential loan, if someone will cover his wages, would allow Antony to find form away from Old Trafford which could either raise his value for a potential sale next summer, or provide a platform to return to United.
