Manchester United are reportedly considering the prospect of including Harry Maguire in a deal for Mason Mount that would see the two England internationals swap clubs this summer.

As has been detailed for over a month, Manchester United currently hold a serious interest in Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, with it being reported that the club and player have agreed personal terms.

This information has since been played down, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that although personal terms have not been completely agreed on, they are not expected to be a problem.

The price for Mason Mount to join Manchester United this summer has been quoted within the region of £60-85 million, with The Sun suggesting that the sum Chelsea want is around £70 million.

This, of course, is a hefty price tag for a player with only one year left on his current contract – The Sun writer Charlie Wyett has further stated that Manchester United could offer Harry Maguire to Chelsea as part of the deal in order to lower the asking price.

Harry Maguire is reportedly valued to be valued at around £30 million – £50 million less than the fee United paid for the England international in August 2019 – with this valuation potentially lowering the fee United would have to pay for Mount to around £40 million.

This transfer move could solve three issues concerning the two clubs.

Firstly, it would mean that Erik ten Hag will be able to get one of his transfer targets through the doors in the opening days of the season. Late signings have been an unfortunate trademark of United in the last few years, which has caused problems as it means new signings are unable to integrate into the squad during pre-season.

Secondly, this means Chelsea will be able to shift one player out of their club early on, allowing them to better focus on incomings for new manager Mauricio Pochettino. It is well known that Chelsea have an overflowing squad, so being able to secure funds and free up space early on is crucial to their transfer plans.

Finally, it meant Harry Maguire will be able to have a fresh start at a new club. Since signing for United in 2019, Maguire has endured much backlash, both due to his price tag and limitations within his game, with many saying that he was handed the captain’s armband too early.

After the signings of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, Maguire has dropped to the bench this season, and a fresh start could be just what he needs to get his career back on track.

“Let’s say I’m happy he’s here and when we needed him he did his job,” Ten Hag said of Maguire recently. “But it’s also a decision he has to make.”
