Manchester United could be set to hijack a transfer from Tottenham Hotspur for a midfield star with “pure quality” this summer.
It’s clear that Manchester United need major reinforcements across several positions, with multiple signings expected this summer.
Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap have been identified as priority targets to bolster Ruben Amorim’s underperforming attack at Old Trafford.
The club is also aiming to strengthen both the midfield and wingback positions, with anticipated player sales helping to finance these additions.
With the Europa League final on the horizon, United have full focus on the game against Tottenham Hotspur, but those in charge are also looking at potential transfers.
United looking to hijack Gomes deal from Spurs
Ahead of that important game, it has emerged that United could look to hijack a transfer that their Europa League finalist opposition have been planning ahead of the summer.
According to Caught Offside, the Reds are considering a move to re-sign Angel Gomes as he approaches the end of his contract with Lille, hoping to beat Tottenham to the free transfer.
Gomes came through the United academy but left in the summer of 2020 and has since became a key player for French side Lille. He made his debut for England earlier this season and was labelled as “pure quality” by United legend Roy Keane.
While Spurs are currently leading the race for the 24-year-old, the report states that United remain in contention and a return to Old Trafford hasn’t been ruled out for the midfielder.
Gomes is attracting widespread interest as he enters the final months of his contract at Lille, with Everton and Crystal Palace also monitoring the situation, alongside Napoli, Juventus and Marseille from abroad.
United need midfield depth but doubts over Gomes exist
It’s evident that Amorim will need to strengthen United’s midfield during the upcoming summer transfer window.
While reinforcing the attack remains the top priority, the midfield is also a concern, especially with Christian Eriksen expected to leave and Casemiro’s future still uncertain despite his recent strong performances.
Although Manuel Ugarte arrived last summer, doubts persist over whether he can cement a place as a regular starter in Amorim’s system.
Gomes would be a cost-efficient option who could provide depth in various midfield roles, although there are some doubts over his ability to deal with the pace and power of the Premier League.
