A Manchester United star has made it clear he wants to remain at Old Trafford, despite reports linking him away from the club.
Manchester United have been in electric form under newly appointed head coach Michael Carrick, securing two wins out of two in the Premier League.
The former Middlesbrough manager has already outclassed both Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal as United hunt down a Champions League finish by the end of the season.
The January transfer window has been a quiet one at Old Trafford, with little certainty over the club’s long-term ambition regarding the next managerial appointment and tactical viewpoint.
The previous summer saw United spend heavily to strengthen their attacking line, bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško. This has meant there has been limited game time elsewhere for United’s other attackers.
One player in particular has made their hopes for the future clear amid uncertainty over their long-term future at the club.
Zirkzee wants to stay at Old Trafford
According to reports from The Sun, Joshua Zirkzee is happy to stay at United despite links in favour of a move to Italy.
The 24-year-old came to United with the expectation that he would be the glue to United’s attacks, linking up play with his smooth technical ability on the ball, juxtaposing his 6ft 4in frame.
However, a combination of injuries and lapses in confidence has made the road bumpy for the Dutchman.
When asked about the future of the striker, Carrick explained, “I think Josh has just been trying to work to get fit and get back around the group, and it’s been great to have him back in training yesterday with a group for the first time.”
“That’s literally as far as it goes for me and for Josh. I’m looking forward to working with him. That’s it.”
“Nothing else has to be said.”
Zirkzee’s role in the squad
Zirkzee has shown on multiple occasions that he can perform to the standard that he showed for Bologna, but inconsistent game time can disrupt the flow.
With United now operating with such willing runners in the squad with the likes of Mbeumo, Amad and Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu all proving to be crucial assets of the side, Zirkzee’s ability to hold up the ball and link up play may be essential for United to succeed.
United’s 2-0 victory against Man City was a fine example of runners getting the best out of a game, as United saw huge attacking success with the bursting runs behind from the attackers.
Furthermore, the potential European football next season would be incredibly demanding on United’s squad, calling for depth to provide the back-up when needed.
