Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has been brutally taken down by Gary Neville following his red card against Tottenham Hotspur

Fernandes, the Manchester United captain would be sent to the showers by the referee following a knee-height challenge near the end of the first-half.

Despite replays showing the challenge was not as bad as it first appeared, the on-field decision stood, with Fernandes leaving the pitch as United trailed by one goal.

Down to ten men, the Red Devils’ second-half performance would only exasperate their troubles, losing 3-0 for the second time in as many home Premier League games.

With Erik ten Hag’s side conceding three or more goals for the seventeenth time since the start of last season, the Dutchman’s team were well off the pace against Tottenham.

Discussing the Fernandes incident that led to Ten Hag’s side being reduced to ten men, Neville a former United captain in his own right would slam Fernandes.

“It just sums up Manchester United in this first half, to be fair they’ve been an absolute disgrace,” Neville emphasised on Sky Sports. It’s one of the worst performances I’ve seen in Erik ten Hag’s time at Manchester United and that’s saying something.

“It’s been really bad. And he will not be able to believe what he’s watched. I’m not talking patterns of play, I’m talking application to a football match. And now, his captain sent off.

“When players react like that, it means something has gone on that we haven’t seen initially. He’s gone knee-high Bruno Fernandes. I think he slips just before the tackle but he’s not going to get away with it.”

Manchester United’s defeat to Tottenham marks the fifth time the Red Devils have lost at home in the Premier League to the London side. Four of those five occasions have come since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

For Ten Hag, the three-time Premier League Manager of the Month will now see the pressure around his long-term future at the club continue to rise.

The Red Devils now sit in twelth place, with six games played in the season’s competition.
